Lance Hunter

Lance Hunter is a mercenary brought into S.H.I.E.L.D. by Isabelle Hartley together with Idaho. He used to work for S.T.R.I.K.E., the British counterpart to S.H.I.E.L.D. until Coulson hired him to become a mercenary. He was at the negotiation with Roger Browning, along with Isabelle Hartley and Idaho, and Skye, May and Triplett as back-up.

He is the sole survivor from that team of the encounter with Carl Creel, and is offered a very remunerative deal by General Glenn Talbot to lead him to Coulson and his new S.H.I.E.L.D.. He views his job as "private military contractor", and feels that "everyone needs an exit strategy eventually", a view not shared by Skye. Talbot notes that he's a former Lieutenant in the S.A.S., with a highly impressive and distinguished military career, and like Coulson and others, wonders why he would choose the 'freelance' option. Hunter claims that it was, at least originally, about a woman - possibly even his ex, Bobbi Morse. Lance is sarcastic and witty, and can usually be found drinking beer in-between missions. He often refers to his "she devil" ex-wife, which quickly becomes an inside joke amongst the team.

It is revealed in "A Hen in the Wolf House" that she is Bobbi Morse, code name Mockingbird, a fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent working undercover at Hydra. Lance Hunter was a Lieutenant in the Special Air Service. He participated in operations in Basra, Iraq and Sierra Leone in 2011 before becoming a mercenary for hire. Hunter was also involved in Operation Panther's Claw in 2009. He was introduced to Jane and Isabelle Hartley through his ex-wife. After leaving the S.A.S. and becoming a mercenary, he joined Hartley's team.

At some point Hunter met and married Bobbi Morse, but later divorced her citing the fact Bobbi always put S.H.I.E.L.D. over him. Also, it drove Hunter crazy how many secrets Bobbi kept from him. After Coulson become the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. he hired Hunter because both Izzy and Bobbi vouched for him. Also, Bobbi thought Izzy needed backup while she was working for Coulson.
