Mack has a brother named Ruben who thinks Mack works for an insurance company. Mack was previously married to a woman named Nicole. They had a daughter together named Hope, but Hope died just four days after she was born. Mack and his wife were divorced sometime after this. During the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Hydra sent an encrypted message out across all S.H.I.E.L.D. communication channels activating all Hydra sleeper agents within S.H.I.E.L.D. Hydra was determined to kill every S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and take control of every S.H.I.E.L.D. facility. Mack was working on a S.H.I.E.L.D. ship, The Iliad, as its chief engineer when Hydra attacked. Mack was taken prisoner, but Bobbi and Izzy saved him. Bobbi informed Mack of her mission to rescue Gonzales and Mack decides to help her.

Robbie finds Mack and tries to convince the Spirit to leave Mack and return to him; Robbie says Mack doesn't have the need for vengeance in him, but the Spirit says "he has a lot of pain. He lost Hope. I can survive off his pain for years." Mack then transforms into Ghost Rider, but Robbie promises the Spirit that if he helps get revenge on Elias then he'll become the Ghost Rider forever. In "The Man Behind the Shield," while on a mission to rescue Director Mace from the Watchdogs, Mack along with Coulson and Fitz are all taken prisoner as well and AIDA downloads their minds into the Framework while replacing them with LMD imposters in the real world.
In "World's End," after downloading her own mind into the Framework, Elena finds Mack, warns him that the Framework is being deleted, and if he doesn't leave with her immediately then he'll be deleted as well which will cause him to die in the real world. However, Mack tells Elena he refuses to live in a world without Hope, but Elena refuses to leave without him. After Hope is deleted, Mack decides to return to the real world with Elena. Later, Mack tells Elena that the time he spent with Hope showed him the life they could have together in the real world.
