A master in the Sui Dynasty, his weapon a golden sword – Xuan Yuan Sword, one of the ten mystical weapons. With his trusted weapon, he can wipe out thousands of enemies on the battlefield singlehandedly. Yuwen Tuo is originally a descendant of the Nothern Zhou Dynasty, but because his dynasty was wiped out by the Sui, he was left with wandering across the vast lands. A general of the Sui Dynasty discovered him, saw his talent and decided to make Yuwen Tuo his disciple. After the general’s death, it was Yuwen Tuo’s responsibility to protect and save Sui. He is also romantically involved with Princess Dugu Ningke.
During those episodes, Xiao Xue was taken away by Yu’er to Taba, and along the road, Jianchi had always been worried about her. In the end, Jianchi was the one who sacrificed for Xiao Xue, leaving them falling down cliff, into the snowy caves. Jianchi used his own body heart to keep Xiao Xue warm, but he froze himself. Xiao Xue worked her miracle healing powers on him and revived him. The two of them went journey further into the caves and found one of the sacred artifacts, the Shennong Cauldron. Unfortuately, the artifact seems to want Jianchi dead, as soon as he comes near one, he’ll be injured by the artifact’s power.
Jianchi was severely injured, and Xiao Xue tried all that she could to save him. However, Jianchi’s 6 spirits that represented all different types of emotions had already left his body. Then, Xiao Xue started her Nuwa Stone to try and keep him alive. It was then, when Jianchi’s spirit said if she sacrificed herself to save him, he would hate her for an entire life. When she finally was able to bring the souls temporarily back into Jianchi’s body, Jianchi, dying, says… “I couldn’t even love you enough, how could I bear to hate you? Did you know, the moment you woke up from your sleep was the most beautiful scene I had ever seen. I won’t drink Mengpo’s forgetful soup when I cross over, because in my next life, I still want to find you.”
Touched by these words, Xiao Xue had slowly fallen in love with Jianchi. After Jianchi’s 6 spirits left his body, where only 3 remaining souls are left, he becomes very crazy, funny, as well as sometimes like a kid. He has all different personalities, sometimes he acted as a little child, which Xiao Xue thought was just adorable, other times, he’d act as an old man, or someone famous.
But one day, Jian Shuang (Ningke in disguise) comes and joins them, as she’s also despirate to find a way to bring the 6 souls back in Yuwen Tuo’s body, Xiao Xue was asked to touch Jian Shuang’s hands to see if she was telling the truth. (Xiao Xue had the powers to see into people’s hearts and lives.) Xiao Xue saw Jian Shuang (Ningke) and Jianchi (Yuwen Tuo) kissing, she became very sad, because she knew they were a couple.
Until later on, when Jianchi was unconscious, Xiao Xue couldn’t help but want to see inside Jianchi’s heart, so she touches him and goes inside his world. Which was a grey, dark world… Jianchi in there was still himself, as Jianchi… That was when Xiao Xue finally confessed her feelings towards Jianchi, saying how touched she was when she heard what he said when he was dying.
Jianchi also felt the same way about Xiao Xue, because the memory with Ningke wasn’t in Jianchi at that time, so without any recollection of the past, he also, truly loved Xiao Xue. After hearing his confession, Xiao Xue becomes happy again, but happiness doesn’t last…
In episode 21, Yu’er and Jingchou finally gets the Kongtong seal and they rush to use that to reassemble Yuwen Tuo’s spirits together. After Yuwen Tuo becomes himself again, he uses Xiao Xue’s Nuwa Stone power to activate the Kongtong seal, then rushes off, leaving Xiao Xue utterly confused, because now, Jianchi is no longer Jianchi, but someone else.
In later episodes, Xiao Xue continues journeying with Jingchou, who know absolutely hates what Yuwen Tuo did and vows to kill him, but because of responsibility, Xiao Xue feels that because she’s the Nuwa Descendant and Jingchou is the Earthly Emperor, they are fated to be a couple and “should” be together, even though neither one of them actually really has feelings for each other.
Xiao Xue feels bad for leading him to believe she likes him, and at the same time, Jingchou won’t admit it, but he really loves Yu’er. The two of them journey together to find the peaches of longevity in the Immortal Mountains.
When Ningke sees that Yuwen Tuo has met up with Xiao Xue and wanted her to live on well, she appeared as Xiao Xue’s mother, Nuwa, to trick her into killing herself. When Xiao Xue put the dagger in her heart, Yuwen Tuo came and drew it out of her. He said that he couldn’t lose her. Xiao Xue wonders why this happened, why he loved someone else and wanted to kill her. But in reality, Yuwen Tuo of course, would still “love” her in a way inside his heart. He probably knows that it’s impossible between them.
In the end, both Xiao Xue and Ningke finally accepted each other, where one of the very touching scenes is when Xiao Xue was brushing Ningke’s heir, a tradition before weddings, to wish good luck to the bride. The two of them are like sisters. Hatred no longer existed between them, only acceptance. Ningke said that she was so thankful that Jianchi had met Xiao Xue, because she was able to achieve something normal people would probably find hard, and that is to let go.
Xiao Xue’s words to Yuwen Tuo was, “We share a unique telepathy power, I can feel how you feel. You still have me in your heart, I still have you. I truly wish you happiness and blessings from my heart.”
Xiao Xue also learnt the meaning of broad love, to see him happy was the result of the love she had for him, and that’s what I really love about the series, is her realization about what love truly meant. I love that Xiao Xue, although not ever really being with Yuwen Tuo, loves him and wishes that he finds his own happiness. At the same time, she’s also continuing her journey to learn more about life and love.
